Assistant Underwriting Manager


  • Assist the Underwriting Manager and oversee all underwriting activities, act in this role if the manager is absent
  • Develop, implement, and manage appropriate underwriting rules and rating structures
  • Provide support and approval for team members and for standard underwriting projects
  • Provide service and solutions to brokers and broker consultants to ensure business retention and profitable growth
  • Provide accurate and relevant risk reporting to relevant stakeholders
  • Direct the underwriting activities, while supporting the risk management activities
  • Assess underwriting risks and determine rates based on these risks
  • Identify underwriting trends and address proactively
  • Peruse surveys and provide input where needed
  • Apply technical underwriting principles to complex accounts
  • Actively participate in the team environment and work closely with the team leaders and management team


  • Bachelor’s Degree (in the fields of either Business Administration, Commerce, Finance, Law, or Accounting)
  • FAIS Regulatory Examination (RE1 and RE5)
  • Full qualification in short-term insurance advantageous
  • Registered with FSCA as a representative and Key Individual
  • Adherence to the FSCA Fit and Proper requirements
  • Min 5 years or more experience in single risk property underwriting
  • Min 2 years or more experience leading and motivating a team
  • Technical knowledge of risk mitigation practices and structures relating to single risk property underwriting
  • Experience with reinsurance and co-insurance


  • Proficiency in analysis, judgement, problem-solving, collaboration, negotiation, business logic, and influencing
  • Proficiency in the MS Office Suite with excellent Outlook, Excel, and Word skills
  • Proficiency in working with insurance systems
  • Proficiency in the relevant legislative knowledge, i.e., Solvency Assessment and Management (SAM), Protection of Personal Information (POPI), short-term insurance acts – FAIS, etc
  • Technically proficient with product knowledge, wording / product endorsements, rates, SASRIA, etc. relevant to type of insurance being offered
  • Conversant in English and Afrikaans
  • Excellent presentation skills and strong ability to interact with management at all levels
